Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo provided an encouraging update on outfielder Corbin Carroll’s status for Opening Day. Carroll, an All-Star outfielder, hasn’t played in any Cactus League games this Spring Training due to a broken hamate bone in his right hand, sustained during batting practice on February 10. Initially, it was uncertain if Carroll would be ready for the season opener, but Lovullo expressed newfound confidence, stating, “I would not be surprised if Corbin is ready by Opening Day.”
A hamate injury generally requires a four-to-six-week recovery period, with concerns about potential loss of strength in the wrist and forearm, critical for Carroll’s game. His recovery process is essential, given his reliance on quick hands and powerful contact. Fortunately, the timing allows Carroll to prioritize rehabilitation without missing regular-season games. If his recovery proceeds as planned, he should have sufficient time to resume workouts and regain strength.
With pitcher Merrill Kelly already sidelined from the Opening Day lineup, retaining Carroll would be a major boost for the Diamondbacks. Lovullo’s optimistic remarks suggest that Carroll’s progress is promising, giving Arizona hope of having their star player ready for the start of the season.
