Chronic inflammation can seriously impact health, but adopting certain lifestyle habits can help reduce it. A study published in the European Journal of Public Health highlights that your commuting habits may play a role in managing inflammation. By analyzing data from the FINRISK study involving over 6,000 Finnish adults, researchers found that walking or biking at least 45 minutes a day for commuting was associated with lower levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a key marker of inflammation linked to various autoimmune diseases, cancer, chronic fatigue, and depression.

The study revealed that active commuting decreased inflammation levels and that these benefits were especially noticeable in women, even after considering factors like diet and exercise. Lead researcher Sara Allaouat emphasized the dual benefits of active commuting for both personal health and environmental impact, pointing out that promoting walking and cycling can yield broader health benefits while reducing traffic emissions.

Although these results are based on a Finnish demographic, numerous studies support the benefits of physical activity in lowering inflammation. For those unable to walk or bike to work, other strategies to combat inflammation include hydrating, reducing refined sugar, and incorporating anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric into your diet. Active commuting, when possible, proves to be a win-win for personal health and ecological well-being.
