Cindy Chiasson, 63, from the Yukon Territory, shares her journey of raising her four grandchildren, ages 9 to 24, while working full-time without a retirement plan. After raising four daughters as a single parent, Cindy returned to school for a degree in criminal justice and worked in corrections, although this kept her away from home during critical years. After a brief, abusive second marriage, her daughters struggled with alcohol and drugs.
Cindy transitioned to working at a Women’s Transition Home, assisting women in moving beyond domestic violence trauma. Her daughter’s addiction led Cindy to unexpectedly gain custody of three grandchildren, whom she has raised since they were 8, 6, and 4. Despite hardships, Cindy emphasizes the importance of family, compassion, and perseverance.
Struggling with limited resources and housing in the Yukon, she managed to secure a home through Habitat for Humanity. As more grandparents assume childcare roles, Cindy underscores the significance of keeping children within family care rather than placing them in systems. Her granddaughter, Sierra, appreciates the wisdom and support provided by Cindy, who remains steadfast in being the unwavering support her grandchildren need. Despite health challenges, Cindy remains committed to her family, proud of their achievements, and hopeful for their future.
