UNI-CENTER project at Hanyang University has transformed the Student Union into a vibrant, multi-functional hub for students. Situated strategically along a main pedestrian axis, the renovation embraces a welfare-centered approach, redefining the building as a campus focal point. Previously isolated and segmented, the building now opens visually and physically to the outdoor plaza, erasing the boundary between inside and outside spaces.
Corridors have been turned into social spaces with the removal of walls, creating an organic flow between different programs. The façade, renewed with L-shaped framing elements, introduces a rhythmic, continuous surface that enhances depth and guides movement between outdoor and indoor areas. The previously dark terrace has been revitalized with metal louvers, linear lighting, and green-toned furniture, creating a lively interface with the campus plaza.
Inside, the ground floor features a spacious community lounge divided into three areas: the Table Lounge for group activities, the Stair Lounge for casual gatherings, and the Bar Lounge for individual study. A semi-transparent counseling booth offers a balance of openness and privacy. The Student Affairs Office boasts an organically shaped counter of birch and steel, set in a bright, welcoming environment.
With its integration of functions, the UNI-CENTER is a model for future campus architecture, emphasizing openness, interaction, and a sense of belonging.
